This past November, "El Lazarillo De Tormes" was published in English for the first time. When the book was originally released back in 1613, it went mostly unnoticed and eventually disappeared from print completely. The new translation is heavily edited by Vicens Vives, who wanted to bring this classic Spanish novel to a wider audience. The story is about an orphan boy and his life on the streets of Seville during Inquisition-era Spain and early New World exploration. It examines class and social hierarchy, exposing its often unfair nature through the lives of all characters involved - humans and animals alike. This translation is the first one to use the title The Lazy Lad, rather than The Lazy Servant. To understand why this change was made, it is important to understand the context for such a title. In Spain (and much of Latin America) Lazarillo has been known as "El Lazarillo De Tormes" since its publication in 1613. This translation follows the spelling and style of the original and uses the same format: "Lazarillo". Translators and publishers elsewhere have made their own interpretations about how best to translate "Lazarillo": ""The Littlewart", "Lazarello", even just Lazarillo – all without keeping to any particular spelling. So, in an attempt to combine the best of all the previous translations, the English version has been named The Lazy Lad. It has been decided that this is a title that will be more pleasing to readers both in Spain and abroad. Andrea Valdes is the author of the Spanish original, published by Planeta in 2007. This version of Lazarillo was awarded with one of Spain's highest literary prizes, "El Premio Nacional" (National Award). This story will be read by many students currently studying Spanish around the world. The Lazy Lad is available both in paperback and Kindle format. The Shepherd, Lazarillo's best friend, he loves hunting birds in the countryside. The Mother of Lazarillo, his mother is sick when she gives birth to him. Turbia, a cat who lives in their house with them when they are in Seville. She is in charge of cleaning the house in exchange for food and she often tells people about her past experiences or dreams.
